Dover Police Records Unit

The Dover Police Department is at 400 S. Queen Street, Dover, DE 19904. Call (302) 736-7111 for non-emergency help. The Records Unit line is (302) 736-7105, open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Six civilian staff work in the unit and handle every piece of paper made by the department. Records processed include criminal reports, arrest reports, traffic crash reports, traffic citations, and city ordinance summons. Reports are ready within 7 to 10 days of the event. Dover PD takes the release of personal info very seriously, and staff check proof of identity before handing over any paper.

Dover PD publishes an annual report with stats by month. Read the reports at doverpolice.org/about/annual-reports. In July 2021, for example, Dover PD made 460 arrests, split between 80 criminal offenses and 380 traffic violations. Criminal offenses broke down into felonies and misdemeanors, and traffic cases included radar, DUI, and other moving violations.

Note: Under 29 Del. C. § 10002(l)(4), any person may obtain their own Dover arrest record on proof of identity, even when third-party access is blocked.

How Dover Crime Reports Are Released

Dover PD will release a "Victim's Copy" of a crime report to any victim listed on the report. There is no fee for a Victim's Copy. Victims must appear in person with photo ID to get the report. Call the Records Unit at (302) 736-7105 first to check that the Dover arrest report is ready.

For minor victims, a custodial parent or legal guardian can pick up the copy. For deceased victims, the next of kin may obtain a copy with proof of the relationship. Dover crime reports are not given to anyone else unless a court subpoena is served.

Insurance companies may ask for Dover crime reports tied to an insured's property only. The request must be in writing, and the current fee is $25.00. No suspect info goes out in the insurance copy. Fees can change, so check with the Records Unit before mailing.

Crash reports follow a similar rule. Drivers and owners of cars in a crash may buy a copy. Insurance firms may request copies with payment. The current fee is $25.00. Call the Records Unit at (302) 736-7106 to verify a Dover crash report is ready before pickup.

Dover Traffic Summons and Ordinance Records

Dover PD can give you a replacement if you lose a Uniform Traffic Summons. Come in person with photo ID. There are no copy fees. The same rule applies for Dover City Ordinance summons. For a phone pay option, call the Records Unit and ask a clerk for credit card details.

Dover also houses the Kent County Courthouse. The building sits on a 5.3-acre site at 414 Federal Street, Dover, DE 19901, bordered by Federal, Water, and The Green streets. It holds the Superior Court, Court of Common Pleas, Justice of the Peace Court 16, Register in Chancery, Prothonotary, Law Library, Jury, and Capitol Police.

The Attorney General and Public Defender keep satellite offices in the Dover courthouse.
